This programme builds on existing knowledge and focuses on supporting teaching and learning at a more advanced level, including working with pupils who have additional or complex needs.

Topics covered include:

  • Advanced support for teaching and learning
  • Supporting pupils with special educational needs (SEN) and disabilities
  • Behaviour management strategies and intervention techniques
  • Safeguarding and child protection at an advanced level
  • Planning, delivering and evaluating learning support
  • Working with external professionals and agencies
  • Communication with parents, carers and multi-agency teams
  • Supporting literacy, numeracy and curriculum access
  • Promoting inclusion and equality in education
  • Monitoring and tracking pupil progress
  • Reflective practice and professional development

Apprentices will continue to develop their skills while working in a real educational setting, taking on greater responsibility and contributing more directly to pupil progress and outcomes.

Entry Requirements

To enrol onto the Specialist Teaching Assistant Level 5 Apprenticeship, learners will typically need:

  • Experience working as a Teaching Assistant (Level 3 or equivalent recommended)
  • GCSE Grade 4/C or above in English and maths preferred
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills
  • A commitment to supporting children with additional needs
  • The ability to take on more responsibility within the classroom

All applicants will complete an initial assessment and interview to ensure the programme is suitable for their role and experience.

Assessment

Apprentices will be assessed through a combination of practical workplace activities and evidence-based assessment methods, including:

  • Workplace observations
  • Professional discussions
  • Written assignments and reflective accounts
  • Portfolio of evidence
  • Case studies based on real practice

If required, learners may also complete Functional Skills in English and maths.

At the end of the apprenticeship, learners will complete an End-Point Assessment (EPA), which may include:

  • Observation of practice in the workplace
  • Professional discussion underpinned by portfolio evidence
  • Assessment of specialist knowledge and skills

The apprenticeship typically takes around 18 to 24 months to complete, depending on prior experience and progression.
